Basically it shows how "well-formed", or technically correct, the HTML code driving your site is. Whilst there are no legal requirements in relation to W3C compliancy, it is important to note that unless your code is perfectly formed, there is no guarantee that users working with alternative web browsers to your own will be able to see your site the way you intended, or even at all! This is becoming increasingly important as more users move away from the once standard Internet Explorer©, and on to various replacements.
